Biography
Nicole was born on the 17th of February, 1985 in the
Netherlands. She grew up in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and
graduated at ‘Revius Lyceum’ in Doorn. After a year of
studying at a high school in Nebraska, United States,
Nicole attended the School of Journalism in Utrecht from
2003 to 2007. During this bachelor degree, she also studied
a minor in journalism, African history and sociology at
Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. And she
worked as a national and international editor for RTL
Nieuws.
In 2007 she moved to Cardiff, Wales to do a master degree
in international journalism. This was the first time Nicole
got the chance to gain some experience in documentary
making. She produced “Lost Souls” – a short
documentary about the recent suicides in South Wales.
A mother who lost her son tells her story and reveals
why the youngsters kill themselves.
For her dissertation project, Nicole produced and directed
a short documentary about street children in Maputo,
Mozambique. She developed this project to Lost Voices, which gives a look into
the daily lives of Maputo’s street children and shows
the consequences of the destructing civil war, which
ended sixteen years ago.
Nicole is a debutant in the documentary world. After
studying in South Africa and travelling around in southern
Africa, she became fascinated by this continent. Its
culture, nature and people captivated her. There are
various stories that yet have to be told. Nicole’s
documentaries reveal social issues that are (partly)
ignored by society. She likes to make the audience think
and judge on the diverse issues themselves.
She is currently based in London, working as a
freelance journalist and documentary maker for stations
like Al Jazeera International and
RTL Nieuws.
